Paul Montgomery’s stellar resume and community-minded approach made a strong impression on the Gold Coast Knights FC family. He made his coaching debut in 2010 while at Ross High School, at Tranent in Scotland. Since then, his impressive coaching career achievements include:

  • A UEFA A coaching qualification.
  • Experience developing players for professional contracts.
  • Experience in professional academies as well as at a grassroots level in Scotland, the USA, and Australia.

Montgomery first laced up his boots as a five-year-old, and the love of the game was still with him as he finished high school. He decided to pursue a sports science degree with an emphasis on sports coaching, all the while volunteering as a community coach with Scottish FA (Scottish Football Association) in Midlothian, Scotland.

Montgomery feels at home at clubs which are striving to be the best, and that is what he’s found at the Knights, which he joined in February 2023. He appreciates how the club is now aligned from first team to academy level, as it is of huge benefit to young Knights.

Regardless of the age group he manages, Montgomery says it important to develop the person as well as the player. For example, in the men’s competition the focus is on winning, while for the Under 18s there is more emphasis on preparing players to enter the first team level. In the academy, training needs to be fun and engaging while extending the players’ knowledge and ability.

Montgomery’s passion for the game has seen many successes, including the treble the GC Knights FC men’s first team achieved in the 2023 season when he and Scott McDonald were assistant and head coach, respectively. Other coaching career highlights include winning the Under 20 Scottish League as head coach with Preston Athletic; developing players to achieve first team contracts in Scotland; and developing several young players for progression into professional academies.
